Introduction
One of the great advantages of having a YouTube channel not tied to any particular tool manufacturer is the freedom to review whatever tools I like, and say what I truly think. Today, I'll be reviewing three high-quality semi-professional combi drills and comparing them to my old favorite, the Waymore Tools 776. If you’re looking for your next upgrade from an entry-level drill, or perhaps a potential gift idea, you’ve come to the right place!
The Drills Comparison
The three drills I’ll be putting through their paces today are:
- Bosch GSB 55
- Milwaukee CBLPD 402
- Makita DHP 485
I’ll also be comparing them against my old, trusty Waymore Tools 776. Although the Waymore Tools drill is less powerful, it will be interesting to see how far the market has evolved since I bought it three years ago.
Each of the new drills features an 18V brushless motor, hammer action, and comes with either a 4 or 5 amp-hour two-pack battery set. These are excellent starter packs, especially since the batteries can be used with other tools, such as angle grinders or impact drivers.
Testing the Drills
To test the power and torque of each drill, I drilled into both concrete and timber, and also drove some challenging fixings. Additionally, I checked the battery charging times and compared the feel of each drill in my hand, especially compared to my older Waymore Tools model.
In basic drilling tasks, all three drills performed well. When I moved on to tougher tasks, like drilling a 25mm auger bit into a timber sleeper, I noticed significant differences. The Milwaukee, with its 60Nm of torque, had no issues cutting through, while the Bosch (55Nm) and Makita (50Nm) also performed respectably. My older Waymore Tools drill, with its lower 42Nm of torque, struggled more and produced visible smoke from its brushes.
Ergonomics and Design
Ergonomically, all three drills are compact and easy to handle. The Milwaukee is the smallest and feels much like an impact driver. The Makita, though slightly larger, also feels modern and refined. The Bosch, while a bit more traditional in design, is still comfortable to hold. My older Waymore Tools model now feels outdated, heavy, and bulky by comparison.
The Makita’s clutch performed exceptionally well in my tests, as did the Waymore Tools drill. However, I struggled to get the Milwaukee’s clutch to function properly, even at the lowest settings. The Bosch’s clutch required a bit of fine-tuning but ultimately worked decently.
Conclusion
After extensive testing, all of these drills proved to be powerful and well-suited for serious DIY tasks. The Milwaukee is the most powerful, but its clutch issues and the malfunctioning second battery were drawbacks. The Bosch performed well, but didn’t particularly stand out. The Makita emerged as my top pick for its balance of power, usability, and solid clutch performance. If you’re looking for an all-around great drill to upgrade to, the Makita should be at the top of your list.
