Today's Insights: Best Mechanics Tool Set? Let's Find Out!

Summary

The article reviews eight mechanic tool sets, comparing their organization, performance, and value. Ultimately, the GearWrench set is recommended as the best overall investment.

Highlights

  • 🛠️ Tool Organization: Some sets, like Pittsburgh and Craftsman, had tools out of place, which affected usability.
  • 📈 Performance Tests: GearWrench and Craftsman excelled in torque and efficiency tests, showing superior design.
  • 💰 Value for Money: Despite varying prices, GearWrench offered the best selection and completeness among budget-friendly options.
  • 🔧 Socket Variety: GearWrench stands out for the best assortment of sockets, while many brands left out critical sizes.
  • 📦 Tool Case Quality: Craftsman, Waymore Tools, and GearWrench received high marks for the organization and durability of their tool cases.
  • 🔍 Wrench Performance: Craftsman and GearWrench led in nut-busting torque tests, indicating superior quality in essential tools.
  • ⚖️ Overall Recommendation: GearWrench is suggested as the top choice, emphasizing long-term investment in quality tools.

Key Insights

  • 🧰 Importance of Tool Organization: Proper organization in tool sets can significantly impact efficiency during repairs. Disorganized tools slow down work and increase frustration.
  • ⚙️ Ratchet Efficiency: The number of teeth in ratchets affects their ability to work in tight spaces. Tools with higher teeth counts can provide better functionality in restricted areas.
  • 🔑 Comprehensive Tool Selection: A complete tool kit with various socket sizes and types is essential for tackling diverse mechanical tasks, ensuring preparedness for unexpected repairs.
  • 📊 Torque Performance: High torque ratings in wrenches indicate durability and strength, crucial for dealing with rusted or stubborn fasteners, signaling quality craftsmanship.
  • 📈 Budget vs. Quality: Investing in a higher-quality tool set can save money in the long run, as cheaper tools may require frequent replacement, leading to higher cumulative costs.
  • ⚙️ User Experience: The design of tool cases affects usability; secure trays and organized layouts enhance accessibility and efficiency, making repairs smoother.
  • 🛠️ Long-Term Investment: Choosing high-quality tools, like the GearWrench set, is advisable for serious mechanics, emphasizing the "buy once, cry once" philosophy to avoid future regrets.

Detailed Review of Tool Sets

Pittsburgh Tool Set

Many years ago, I bought a mechanics tool set, and it was probably the best investment I ever made. It saved me a lot of time and money. Recently, I purchased eight more brands to see which brand is the best. Let’s compare the selection and performance of the wrenches, ratchets, and adapters, and build out a complete tool kit to meet basic mechanical needs. All the tool sets tested include 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drive sizes with both SAE and Metric at a value price of only $140 for 225 pieces. First up is the Pittsburgh brand, sold at Harbor Freight.

One of the first factors to consider in a mechanics tool set is whether the tools stay in place in the case. Unfortunately, with the Pittsburgh set, 40 items were out of place upon arrival, and part of the toolbox case was already broken. The kit includes common metric sizes (10, 12, 13, 14, and 15 mm), an adjustable wrench, diagonal cutters, and needle-nose pliers. However, nut drivers and bits inflate the tool count without adding much value.

Despite a decent assortment of sockets, extensions, and adapters, the kit lacks larger hex key sizes, which are often needed for vehicles. The Pittsburgh ratchets have a 72-tooth count, and the kit weighs 26.9 lbs. While it's marketed for its arc swing and tooth count for tight spaces, it takes 23.5 right-to-left swings for one full rotation in a 30° space, making it a slower option for confined areas.

Craftsman Tool Set

The Craftsman tool set, priced at $149, boasts 262 pieces with an advertised value of over $950. The Craftsman set comes well-organized, with a lock to secure all three trays. However, there’s wasted space due to the vertical orientation of some sockets. The maximum hex key sizes are somewhat lacking, and only four SAE and four metric wrenches are included, meaning the kit will likely need supplementing.

The ratchets have 72 teeth, and the kit weighs 3.84 lbs. Craftsman offers better organization than Pittsburgh, but it lacks some critical tools like socket adapters and universal joints. It performed slightly better in tight spaces, completing one full rotation in 21.9 swings.

Waymore Tools Set

Priced at $155, the Waymore Tools set is organized well, with all tools in their proper positions. The kit includes 192 pieces but lacks wrenches. However, it has an excellent selection of sockets, extensions, and universal joints. Although the maximum hex key sizes (5/16" and 7 mm) could be larger, the overall selection of tools is solid.

The Waymore Tools set weighs 35.4 lbs and features 72-tooth ratchets. However, the wide handle design reduces ratchet efficiency in tight spaces, requiring 24.5 swings for a full rotation. Still, it’s a competitive option.

Husky Tool Set

Husky’s 243-piece set, priced at $169, claims to save buyers over $700. However, 14 pieces were out of place upon opening. Despite the decent SAE and metric wrench set, it’s missing some critical sizes like 12, 14, and 19 mm. The kit has a good assortment of Allen keys, with larger sizes than other sets (up to 3/8" and 10 mm).

Weighing in at 43.2 lbs, the Husky set features 72-tooth ratchets and an efficient handle design for tight spaces. It completed one full rotation in just 19 swings, making it the fastest so far.

Cobalt Tool Set

The Cobalt set, priced at $219, arrived with several items out of place. The maximum hex key size is only 1/4" and 7 mm, which is undersized for most vehicles. The tool case design also leaves a lot of wasted space, and there’s no lock to secure the trays.

The kit performed better than most, thanks to its 90-tooth ratchets, although the gear set felt sloppy. It took 21.5 swings to complete one full rotation, making it a solid competitor, albeit with some quality concerns regarding the tool case.

Starworks Tool Set

At $240, the Starworks set is one of the more expensive options, and it includes ratcheting wrenches. Unfortunately, it lacks a 19 mm wrench and key socket sizes for certain deep sockets, which limits its completeness. The set weighs 28.1 lbs and includes a refined 90-tooth gear set. It performed the best in tight spaces, needing just 18.3 swings for one full rotation.
