Today's Insights: Think Clearly Before Doing It? The Real Question is "Think" or "Do"!

Table of Contents

Introduction

Think clearly before doing it? "Think" is the question, "do" is the answer!

Overcoming Self-Doubt

When we see others making extraordinary achievements in a certain field, we may think: I am not as good as them, so I might as well not do it. However, all "awesome" things are "made" from scratch; don't just stop thinking, take the first step bravely! Many people think that I have a very outgoing personality and can be relaxed when interacting with others, so some say that my personality traits should be inherent in my bones. But in fact, I suffered from severe asthma since I was a child, so many activities were restricted. In addition, my father passed away when I was 13 years old. Such a blow made me very closed off in interpersonal relationships.

The Impact of a Smile

It wasn't until the summer after I graduated from high school and was admitted to Tsinghua University that a noble person in my life gave me a copy of "Carnegie Communication and Interpersonal Relationships", which officially started my different life. After reading the book carefully, I found that the author shared all the interpersonal relationship advantages that I should have, but I didn't have any of them. Such surprise and awareness made me want to change myself. In the second chapter of the book, there is a special reminder that if you want to improve your interpersonal relationships but don’t know how to start, then start by simply "smiling" at others. So during the summer vacation when I was admitted to college, I obediently spent nearly 10 minutes every day practicing smiling in front of the mirror. This continued for nearly a month, until the freshman training during the summer vacation.

Facing a strange environment and the beginning of a new life, I used the smile I had practiced for more than a month to face everything I encountered again. Unexpectedly, a miracle happened. Many classmates saw me and were willing to talk and share with me, and even asked me if I would like to be their roommate in the same dormitory. Just such a simple smile unexpectedly opened up a different and beautiful relationship for me. It’s really... you won’t know if you don’t do it, you will know it only after you do it, as long as you can afford to lose. Just a faint smile, and if you think about it seriously, even if you practice for more than a month, if it doesn't work, what do you have to lose?

Unexpected Opportunities

What's more, the roommates I shared in the same dormitory were each more powerful than the other, and they kept opening my eyes to different experiences. One of them was a professional guitarist and had been singing in restaurants for many years. When we were in the dormitory, not only would the two of us sing and play guitar together; he even suggested that I go to the restaurant to sing in residence. In this way, he encouraged me to audition for the song without knowing anything about it, and I was accepted. Then I started a singing career that lasted for nearly 7 years. Later, because of this experience, I wrote and composed nearly a hundred songs with singers, and even served as a music DJ and advertising voice actor on the radio. These were all unexpected experiences.

Another roommate of mine was an outstanding president of the department society. By chance, he participated in a college leadership training camp and got to know an excellent international society, AIESEC (Economics and Business Administration Students Association). At that time, almost many universities had branches of this society, but Tsinghua University did not; so he encouraged me to organize it. I don’t know where I got the courage. I listened to his suggestion and said “yes”. Then, roughly in succession, in order to recruit new members, I gave nearly two hundred speeches of various sizes; thus the club was established. Later, because of the establishment of this club, I was recommended to the economic and trade training camp of the National Salvation Corps. Then I performed well in the camp and represented Taiwan in the youth delegation to South Africa and served as the leader. Because of my role as the leader, I was also asked to speak in English to various local groups abroad. The chain reactions that followed one after another were something I never thought of when I founded the association.

The Power of Action

More importantly, whether it is a singing career or creating a club, they are not what I could have imagined when I read the book "Carnegie Communication and Interpersonal Relationships" and spent more than a month practicing smiling. Everything that was previously unimaginable has become possible later. In fact, whenever we want to do a lot of things, whether it is with our relatives, friends, or even ourselves, we often put the words "Think clearly!" in front of our actions. But there is a book that I like very much called "The Ability Trap". The book says that one thing we need to be very clear about is that "you can never think clearly." Because we cannot use our limited abilities in the past to think clearly about the infinite potential in the future. The reason is also very simple, just like how we could understand the adult world when we were children; just like how we could think clearly about the trends of the Internet in an era without the Internet. Thinking makes it unclear; doing it makes it clear.

More often than not, when we see others being great, and then "after careful consideration" feel that we are not as good as others, we decide to give up and move forward. However, the key point is that we don’t know how much time it took others to go through and get to where they are now and become great. Therefore, don’t compare the present where you started to the present when others are great. In other words, don’t compare your starting point with someone else’s ending point. After all, everyone has a childhood, and Zhu Yuanzhang also suffered from dysentery. It’s not that you start because you’re awesome, but that you’re awesome because you start. Just like one of my noble elder brothers, he often told me that all growth in life begins with "willingness". When you are willing to try, you will be able to see more possibilities and be knowledgeable; and the more you see, you will not be afraid of the unknown, and you will have more courage and courage to face the growth you are about to experience.

Conclusion

Trying brings knowledge, knowledge brings courage. If you don’t do it, you will think about it for a lifetime; if you do it, you will talk about it for a lifetime. Thinking is the question, doing is the answer. Thinking, not knowing clearly, doing it, will make it clear.
