Today's news:
1. A law prohibiting the import, production and sale of e-cigarettes in Kazakhstan came into effect on the 20th. The bill does not set penalties for people who use e-cigarettes.
2. On the 20th, Korean Air announced that it will resume multiple Chinese routes and increase the capacity of some existing routes to cope with the continued growth in demand.
3. Counterpoint Research: In the first quarter, global VR headset shipments fell 29% year-on-year and 51% month-on-month. The month-on-month decline was partly due to the seasonal impact of the Black Friday promotion season in North America and the Double Eleven promotion season in China.
4. Canalys: It is expected that by 2024, the proportion of 5G smartphone shipments will increase to 67%. However, since 2022, when 5G smartphone shipments accounted for more than 50%, the penetration rate has slowed down.
5. Omdia: The scale of the data center thermal management market has soared to US$7.67 billion in 2023. This unprecedented growth momentum is expected to continue until 2028, reaching US$16.8 billion, with an average annual compound growth rate of 18.4%.
6. Counterpoint Research: In the first quarter, the revenue of the world's top five wafer equipment manufacturers fell by 9% year-on-year. Among them, ASML's revenue fell by 21% month-on-month and 26% year-on-year, respectively, and KLA fell by 14% month-on-month and 5% year-on-year.
7. Intel: Intel3 process has entered the mass production stage, which is used for the manufacture of Xeon6 series data center processors, and will also undertake foundry customer orders in the future. Intel3 not only brings higher transistor density and performance, but also supports high voltages above 1.3V.
8. The price increase trend of the semiconductor industry chain has gradually spread since May. First, mainstream storage manufacturers raised prices due to sold-out production capacity, showing that the cyclical storage industry is rebounding rapidly from the downturn, and now it is transmitted to wafer fabs. Industry insiders predict that with the clearance of inventory and the recovery of demand, the prosperity of the power semiconductor industry will continue to rise in the second half of the year.
According to Yole's forecast, the global advanced packaging market will grow from $37.8 billion in 2023 to $69.5 billion in 2029, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.7%. It is expected that in 2024, major manufacturers such as TSMC, Intel, Samsung, and ASE will invest a total of about $11.5 billion in the field of advanced packaging.

Today's Insights: International Cooperation in Supply Chain and Global Economic Trade
According to the social media account of "BRICS News" on the 21st, Thailand officially applied to join the BRICS. Chai Watchalon, spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office of Thailand, said on May 28 that the Thai cabinet meeting approved the draft letter of intent submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on joining the BRICS. He believes that becoming a member of the BRICS will benefit Thailand, help enhance Thailand's international status, and provide more opportunities for Thailand's economic development.
Thai Foreign Minister Mali also emphasized at the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Russia not long ago that the BRICS, as an emerging market country with huge economic potential, has the potential to promote developing countries to play a greater role on the global stage. "If Thailand can become a member of the BRICS and cooperate with it, whether as a developing country or an emerging economy, it will help clarify Thailand's role in international affairs and effectively defend Thailand's interests."
BRICS: The name of the BRICS countries comes from the abbreviation composed of the first letters of the English names of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Because the spelling and pronunciation of "BRICs" are similar to the English word "bricks", Chinese media and scholars translate it as BRICS. In 2011, South Africa officially joined the BRICS, and the English name was set as BRICS. Since the establishment of the BRICS cooperation mechanism, the foundation of cooperation has been increasingly consolidated and the scope has been gradually expanded.
It has formed a multi-level framework led by leaders' meetings and supported by ministerial meetings such as the Meeting of High Representatives for Security Affairs and Foreign Ministers' Meetings, and has carried out pragmatic cooperation in dozens of fields such as economy and trade, finance, science and technology, agriculture, culture, education, health, think tanks, and sister cities. It has become a constructive force to promote world economic growth, improve global governance, and promote the democratization of international relations.
